Put on the Spot Here#8217;s How to Own Your Response

Put on the Spot Here8217s How to Own Your Response Article by Kelli RichardsNo one likes being put on the spot, but the experience does teach you to anticipate the unexpected. Thats a lesson forever useful in life and in business. While technological advances in communication have diminished the frequency of in-person interactions, face-to-face exchanges are still among the most preferred forms of business communication, according to marketing strategy firm Ballantine. In one survey conducted by Verizon, 87 percent of respondents said in-person meetings were more creative and productive than virtual meetings. But what happens when face-to-face chats go awry when the conversation pivots in an unforeseen direction and you are suddenly asked to perform on the fly? Adapt or die, as they say. Or perhaps less dramatically, learn how to be an impromptu harte nuss solver what I call a universal adapter.I once met with a prominent family who opted to back one of my clients. Turns out, I wasnt prepared for them. Every sibling weighed in on business decisions, which created an unexpected dynamic. The next curveball came when I realized I was essentially auditioning to secure the opportunity. They asked me to present my business approach on the spot, but I hadnt reviewed any materials or plans. With limited information and preparation, I wasnt ready to provide that level of detail.Should I have been more prepared? Yes. Was the situation mildly uncomfortable? Definitely. Still, my predicament became an opportunity to practice thinking on my toes. I operated from my gut, put my best foot forward, and tried to follow the conversation. I responded with as much insight as I could offer. In the end, we moved forward, and it was a great learning experience. With time and practice, my ability to perform as a universal adapter has grown. Its both a mindplatzset and a muscle that grows stronger every time its stretched.Learning to think on the spot do esnt happen overnight. With a little finesse and confidence, you can recover the next time a live meeting finds you scanning the floor for answers.1. Dont Be Afraid to Buy Some TimeWhen youre caught off-guard in a meeting, being fast on your feet is obviously ideal. But if you find yourself panicking, its best to pause. Ask for a short break, even just to use the restroom or take a slow, measured drink of your water or coffee. Use that time to develop an effective response.Another way to buy timeis repeatingthe question. The person to whom youre speaking will see it as engagement on your part rather than a stalling technique. You can also ask about desired outcomes and expectations before answering the question. These simple tactics can turn a stressful scenario intoa collaborative problem-solving session. You and your conversation partner might have been on different pages before, but now youll meet in the middle.2. Lean on Your TeamYou dont have to have all the answers. Step back and give your colleagues a chance to shine. Just make sure youve discussed how to best support each other beforehand. When you leverage coworkers in a meeting, you build your own credibility while giving them a chance to shine. Your colleagues can set you up for success by ensuring youre recognized for sharing noteworthy ideas. Moreover, they can refer back to something you shared if someone else tries to take credit for your idea, for example. Your colleagues can serve as evangelists on your behalf by reinforcing your strengths, and you can do the same for them.Once during a group discussion, one of my peers had more direct experience with the topic than I did. So I put the ball in his court by asking him, Didnt you deal with a similar issue recently? How did you address it? By doing this, I demonstrated leadership, collaboration, and a commitment to bringing value to the conversation by involving an expert.3. Put People at EaseItseasy to forget to be affable when youre nervous and navigating a tough conversation, but being friendly and welcoming can enhance your chances of success. Look into the eyes of the people youre talking to, smile and laugh at their jokes, and try to make them laugh as well. Humor releases tension by creating a sense of levity, which can offset stress and negative feelings. In a study conducted by the Bell Leadership Institute, employees were asked to describe the strengths of their company leaders. They mentioned sense of humor and work ethic twice as much as any other phrases, suggesting these traits are critical for leadership success.Humor is a vital tool of leadership, institute founder and CEO Dr. Gerald Bell said in a press release about the study. People are used to associating laughter with the best medicine, but they are often surprised that sense of humor is the phrase most frequently associated with the best in leaders.Bell noted that a leader who possesses a strong work ethic and a sense of humor might have an edge over lea ders who dont. Use this to your advantage in a social setting or meeting Making people laugh creates a great deal of power, reducing the chances of being put on the spot. And if you are put on the spot, humor can make the situation less uncomfortable.On-the-spot moments are unavoidable, but they dont have to be detrimental. Buy time if you need to, rely on your colleagues for backup, and make participants feel comfortable. Do these things and youll be well on your way to expert universal adapter status.A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com.A highly sought-after consultant, super connector, trusted adviser, celebrity wrangler, and thought leader, Kelli Richards is the CEO of The All Access Group. Hired! Interview Prep Leads to Work in Afghanistan

Hired Interview Prep Leads to Work in AfghanistanHired Interview Prep Leads to Work in AfghanistanConstruction foreman lands job in Afghanistan due to experience in Iraq and Ladders interview prep service. When youre looking for work in a war zone, it helps to do some research to prepare you for what to expect. Peter Vasquez did his research, and it lumineszenzdiode him to a new work front in Afghanistan. The CEO welches surprised that I knew as much about the company as I did, the UpLadder member said about his interview with the head of Technologists Inc., a construction firm based in Rosslyn, Va., that was looking to hire people for a new construction project in Afghanistan. Vasquez, who had recently returned from a 15-month stint doing construction as a civilian contractor on a military base in Iraq, had a good sense of what this new job would entail. He knew what type of work Technologists would be doing and what the conditions would be like. And he knew how to find out what proje cts the company would be working on.In fact, it was this knowledge that scored Vasquez the interview. I was on the Internet 10 or 12 hours a day, searching for jobs and researching information about companies, he said. I saw that Technologists had won a contract from the U.S. government to build a police-training facility and sent a elende to the CEO congratulating the company on the contract and attached my resume. A couple of days later, I got a note back from them, asking if Id like to come in for an interview. With that hurdle vanquished, Vasquez faced another the prospect of a job interview, something he hadnt had to do in a very long time.More prepared for the job than the interviewVasquez, who had owned his own business for several years before working in Iraq, was a little nervous about selling himself. During his searching of Ladders site, he recalled seeing a feature called Interview Prep. It intrigued me, Vasquez said. I wrote to them Im not an interview guru. Do you have any suggestions for me? Someone got right back to me.That someone was Alan Cohen, a certified executive coach who works with members of Ladders. With Peter, it was a matter of smoothing out the rough edges, Cohen said. What I saw was someone who was incredibly strong on values, on ethics. He was very hard working he had worked his way up in the construction industry. All of unterstellung things set him apart and made him attractive to an eventual employer.Vasquez sent Cohen some information about Technologists along with the job posting, so Cohen could have some background. My coach even did some research himself about the company, Vasquez said. He sent me some questions - the most-asked questions on an interview - and told me to be prepared for them. He conducted a mock interview with me, and along the way would say, Instead of saying that, say this, or, Can you explain this better? Cohen worked with Vasquez over the course of three days, preparing him for how to answer questions such as What are your strengths? and the dreaded What are your weaknesses? steering him to answer in a way that put his skills in the best light.A wealth of choicesPart of the challenge for both Vasquez and Cohen was the fact that Technologists was considering Vasquez for three different positions. The company had openings for a construction manager, a construction foreman and a project manager. So, the interview would be anything but typical. The key thing I told him going in was to act like a consultant, Cohen said. If you say to the interviewer, Well, it sounds like you are looking for help here. In my experience, this is what I have done, and this is what I can do to help you, you can show them how to solve their problems. And that creates value.Cohen said Vasquez was well on his way to presenting himself in that light before Cohen even spoke to him. He told me, Id be willing to just look at the plans and tell them what I can do. He wanted to roll up his sleeves and show the com pany what he was capable of. That was great. He was already thinking like a consultant. The raw material was all there, said Cohen. Peter knew the business, but he hadnt interviewed for a job in a long time. I often tell people, its not so much about selling yourself as having an exchange of information and trying to see if this job is the right fit. He needed to be prepared to answer questions but also to ask questions to find out if this organization was where he wanted to work. If he did, then he needed to go into sales mode. One other point that Cohen strongly coached Vasquez on was salary how to negotiate, and when. He was ready to go into the interview talking about money, said Cohen. But I told him, Dont talk about it until you are offered the job. Oftentimes, job seekers want to talk about it first thing, but that can be a big mistake.Armed with a new approach and a lot of confidence, Vasquez flew to Virginia to meet with several people from Technologists. When he got there, t he first person he met was the CEO, and he worked his knowledge of the industry into the conversation.Without a doubt, I felt more confident going into that interview, Vasquez said. When you dont do this every day, it can be mind-boggling. Put me in a room with architects, engineers, a PowerPoint, no problem. Im not nervous. I could do that all day long. But an interview - thats something a little bit new. Before that interview, Vasquez spent several months wondering if he would find a job He returned to his Chicago home in October from Iraq, needing to take care of loose ends with a business he had sold 18 months earlier. He had been working for KBR, the division of Halliburton that won many government contracts in Iraq. KBR would not hold his job for him when he came back to the States, so it was back to the job search in November.Benefits of international workWhile Vasquez would have liked to find work locally, I looked, and there wasnt much happening in the U.S., he said. Vasque z had another reason for wanting to work overseas the first $84,700 earned is tax-free, he said, as long as you spend only 35 days in the U.S. a year. That benefit meant he could keep more of his salary. So he hit the job boards, sending out what he estimates was 1,200 to 1,400 resumes. He was looking all over the world Canada, Dubai, Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries for jobs as a project manager, an estimator, a contract administrator, a carpenter or a host of other construction jobs. I thought, I might as well look everywhere. It seemed like a bad time, though. I wasnt getting that many responses, he said. I figured, with the holidays coming up, no one was going to hire. Then I thought, After the new year, maybe things will pick up. But it was very slow. Then, the week prior to the Inauguration, things did departure to pick up. Thats when I sent my letter and resume to Technologists.Things happened very quickly from there. He returned home from his interview on a Friday by that Sunday evening, he had a job offer via e-mail. Vasquez is leaving for Afghanistan the first week of Feb. 5 to take the construction foreman position with Technologists Inc. He will leave his wife and 10-year-old son in Chicago but hopes he can come back every six months for a few weeks at a time.My wife at first wasnt too keen on my going overseas again. But she sees now that times are hard, and I can get better-paying work in Afghanistan. My son said, You do what you gotta do. I think he understands. This will be different from working on a military base, he said. There will be some Americans, but we will be working with a lot of people from the local village, which is about 30 miles south of Kabul. Some might have construction skills, but were going to teach them how to do construction. And, while it will be hard to be away from his family in Chicago, he is looking forward to the change of scenery. I enjoy the excitement of being in a different place, he said. Its an adrenaline rus h. Im not a crazy thrill guy. But I enjoy different cultures. And this is a good company. It has doubled in size in the past two years. I hope to move up as they move up.This was something that attracted him to this small company based in Afghanistan. Im working for a young and growing company, he said. Im not just a number. Ive been told that there will be jobs in Afghanistan through 2025, so I think this is a good job move.

What to Do When Your Boss or Co-worker Yells at Work - The Muse

What to Do When Your Boss or Co-worker Yells at Work - The MuseWhat to Do When Your Boss or Co-worker Yells at Work You do your best to keep your emotions in check when youre in the office. And, even if you did fall victim to having a rare emotional outburst on an off day, you addressed the situation, said your genuine apologies, and moved on.But, what about when your co-worker or boss is the one to flip his lid in the middle of the workday? Should you respond immediately, even though hes emotionally charged? Should you just ignore it and pretend it never happened? Should you pack up your desk, move to Bermuda, and hide for the remainder of your career?Lets face it- were all human. And, just because we all try to maintain a professional reputation in the office doesnt necessarily mean were able to check all of our emotions at the door. These things happen. But, it doesnt mean that your peers or supervisor have a free pass to constantly fly off the handle. When someone in your office has a meltdown- particularly if its directed at you- you want to make sure the circumstances are handled, without signing up for a leading role in your offices drama. Sound impossible? Its not Follow unterstellung steps to effectively deal with the situation and carry on. (Or, move to Bermuda. Its your choice.)1. Dont Engage ImmediatelyFirst things first, do your best not to engage when someone in your office is having an outburst. Its easier said than done, especially if your co-worker is bellowing directly at you from across the conference room table. But, participating in a conversation (a.k.a., screaming match) with him or her will only serve to escalate the situation. We all know that emotionally distressed people arent exactly capable of having rational and reasonable discussions. So, youre simply wasting your time and breath. Whether your co-worker is sobbing or screaming, its important to give her some time to cool off. That way you can both come back to the situation with a clear head. 2. Analyze the SituationOnce the craziness has died down and your co-worker or boss has retreated to his desk in anger or embarrassment, its time for you to think about your next steps.Theres no need to get yourself wrapped up in a situation that didnt even directly involve you in the first place. So, take some time to consider whether or not this is something you even need to take action on. Did this outburst directly impact you? If your co-worker was yelling and pointing a finger in your face, then- obviously- the answer is yes. But, if the hostility was directed at someone else and you were just a witness, do you really want to stick your neck out and get brought into a situation that really has nothing to do with you?Outbursts are uncomfortable to witness, and your first inclination might be to jump up and defend a co-worker. But, make sure to evaluate the circumstances first- or you might end up having a meltdown of your own3. Determine Your ApproachSo, youve decide d that you just couldnt let the situation be swept under the rug. Your co-worker or boss behavior crossed a line, and the idea of letting it slide and carrying on as normal immediately makes your jaw clench and your palms sweat. What now? Its time to figure out your best course of action. You have numerous options for handling the situation- you just need to pick the best one to address the circumstances. If the emotional flare-up was threatening or harassing in any way, youll likely want to involve a superior or your human resources department. Certain actions require repercussions, and a simple Whoops, sorry isnt always enough to smooth over outrageous behavior. You might feel like a tattletale, but you deserve a workplace that isnt hostile. In contrast, if your co-worker or boss just got a little too heated without being aggressive or vulgar, you can likely handle that situation yourself. Rather than springing a conversation on him or her, request a time that you could sit down and chat. Then, explain how you felt that the outburst was unwarranted and how it made you uncomfortable. Not sure what to say? Something simple like, I understand that sometimes we all lose our cool. But, the way you reacted made me feel very uncomfortable. Can we talk about some ways that we can better communicate with each other when we disagree? should do the trick.Of course, you can always sit back and wait for an office peer to approach you with a humble apology. But, if the situation is really nagging at you (or, that employee has a reputation for being ridiculously stubborn), youre better off tackling it head on to avoid letting it fester. 4. Move OnEmotions will definitely find their way into the workplace here and there, but that doesnt mean your office needs to be tense and awkward. While your co-worker or boss emotional explosion served to make things uncomfortable, holding a grudge definitely wont make things any better. Thats right, its time to do the tough thing and be th e bigger person. If the situation has been handled and youve received a somewhat genuine apology, its time to let it go and move on. No muttering under your breath, snarky office gossip, or refusing to work on a team with him or her. After all, what purpose do those snide remarks and passive aggressive actions serve? Theyll likely only add fuel to the fire- and maybe even inspire another outburst Witnessing your boss or co-worker lose his or her grip is uncomfortable- and even more so when youre directly involved in the incident. But, dont let your own emotions get the best of you too Follow these steps to successfully handle the situation with dignity.Otherwise, I hear the weather in Bermuda is nice this time of yearPhoto of man freaking out courtesy of Shutterstock.

Research Working for a company accused of misconduct can cost you money

Research Working for a company accused of misconduct can cost you moneyResearch Working for a company accused of misconduct can cost you moneyWhen you work for a company thats been up to no good, employers will start to think youre up to no good - even if youre innocent. Working for a company thats been accused of misconduct can not only cost your professional reputation, it will literally cost you money, according to a new working paper from Harvard geschftlicher umgang School.Looking at the resumes and resulting pay of executives looking for new work, researchers George Serafeim and Boris Groysberg found that there is a guilt by association when you have worked for a company rocked by scandal. You have this great name on your CV, and suddenly it goes from being an asset to a liability, Serafeim told Harvard Business School.Research Even if youre innocent, your future job compensation goes down when youve worked for a company thats been shamedUsing data from an executive search firm , the researchers looked at job-switching executives with work histories at firms that had committed financial misconduct.Even controlling for factors like education, gender, and experience, they found that the executives with a stigmatized company on their resume - 18% of the 2,034 executives placed between 2004 and 2011- experienced a significant decrease in pay, about 4% lower on average, after switching firms. If the financial scandal had occurred recently, and if you were a financial executive when it occurred, interviewers were more suspicious of your involvement, and docked pay accordingly. The researchers found that the stigma effect increased depending on the employees seniority, the employees proximity in relation to the scandal, and how recently the financial scandal had occurred. If a candidates record generates sufficient concern to devalue, why entertain any risk when there is the safer option to shun? the paper speculates about why the pay dock could occur. Even when ex ecutives are free from wrongdoing, stigma costs can materialize out of the increased burden of scrutiny. Higher-ranked positions are more visible, and such scrutiny translates into higher costs for arbiters to promote such candidates. How to talk to future employers about having worked for a shamed companyIf youve worked for a company thats been shamed, theres still a way for you to salvage your reputation. When you go in for an interview, acknowledge the elephant on your resume. You can tactfully acknowledge the scandal, without badmouthing your previous employer, by being upfront with an interviewer about how your personal values diverge from what happened at your company.Thats the proactive advice Randy Conley, Vice President of Client Services and Trust Practice Leader at the leadership development companyThe Ken Blanchard Companies, advised. When asked what he would tell Uber employees who have worked for a company thats been publicly shamed, he provided a script you can adapt fo r yourself I was afforded a lot of wonderful opportunities at Uber to grow my skillset, to make some really good contributions. My personal values were a mismatch with the organization. The way I conduct myself, the things I that I believe about how you should treat people, that wasnt shared by the organization as a whole and some of its senior leadership. The bottom lineAfter you acknowledge the elephant, move on. You want to be spending your valuable interview time talking about your skills and goals, not your checkered work history.

5 Digital Nomad Habits Anyone Can Adopt at Work - The Muse

5 Digital Nomad Habits Anyone Can Adopt at Work - The Muse5 Digital Nomad Habits Anyone Can Adopt at WorkIm going to guess that alfruchtwein everyone out tzu siche has spent at least one afternoon staring at their inbox in a daze or sitting in a binnenseemingly endless meeting, daydreaming about becoming a digital nomad. It sounds ideal working from inspiring locations, being in charge of your time, skipping the small talk. After nomading for the past year, I can tell you some things about the experience that really are dreamy. Not everyone can pop over to the monkey forest on their coffee break or take meetings against the backdrop of a glittering sea. But you dont necessarily have to pick up and move halfway across the globe to enjoy some of the benefits of this lifestyle. In fact, there are plenty of habits that anyone can adopt to make their days more inspiring. 1. Shake Up Your SceneryOne of the most obvious benefits (and the one we eye enviously on Instagram) is getting to work from beautiful locations, whether its a hip cafe in Berlin or a beach in Bali. I love being able to switch up my environment on a daily basis, says Nisha Garigarn, who has been nomading for the past three years while co-founding Croissant. I can find myself working from a classy hotel lobby one day, and from a sunny outdoor terrace with a beer on another day. I love the idea of injecting small doses of inspiration in your daily life by working from different spots. Even if you cant get to quite such exotic locations from your cubicle, youre still surrounded by places that are not your office. Is there a coffee shop around the corner or a hotel lobby you particularly love? Talk to your boss to see if you can negotiate one day (or even a couple hours) every week to go work from there, or organize a retreat for your whole team to get offsite and get some work done (heres an schmelzglas template to help you make that ask). If thats not an option, try taking some of your meetings out of the office. At the very least, see what moving from your desk to another corner of the office can do. I think office workers will benefit from a change of pace or scenery to reignite creativity and problem-solving skills, shares Krista Gray, nomad and founder of GoldSquare. Creating this sense might be as simple as working from a new desk to avoid getting stuck in a routine or operating on autopilot. Courtesy of Krista Gray2. Take Advantage of Your SurroundingsDigital nomads love being able to explore exciting places and get to know interesting people- and you dont have to go far to do the same Im willing to bet that, wherever youre living and working, there are plenty of things youve been wanting to do but havent. Finally seeing that new museum exhibit, trying a restaurant everyone raves about, or checking out a beautiful walking path could be the perfect way to inject some adventure into your routine. When youre a digital nomad, youre more likely to take advantage of your surroun dings, says Lynze Ballay, whos living in Buenos Aires while working on her onboarding consulting business and She Works Abroad. You know that you probably wont be in this same place forever.Push yourself to do the same and be a tourist where you live now. If you have a real lunch break, use it to explore a new spot. Take advantage of the amazing people surrounding you at work and grab coffee with a colleague you havent gotten to know before. And if all else fails, sneak in a little time researching for an evening activity or a day trip you can take on the weekend.3. Let Your Schedule Follow Your EnergyMany digital nomads love the freedom from a strict 9-to-5 office routine, instead opting to let their schedules change based on their energy or sightseeing plans. The ability to tailor my schedule to the individual day has changed my productivity levels immensely, says travel and lifestyle journalist Jillian Dara. I am very productive in the early hours of the morning and tend to have b rainstorming sessions late at night.Courtesy of Jillian DaraThe most obvious way to bring this digital nomad benefit home would be to try to negotiate a schedule that works best for you. Do you love working early and hate the afternoons? Consider adjusting your work schedule to be 7 AM to 4 PM if that suits you better. Your boss might be fine with it, shares Megan Berry, VP of Product at remote-friendly Octane AI- and, Ill add, that you wont know if thats the case unless you ask. Barring that, work within regular office hours to create a schedule as close to ideal as possible. For example, block out your most productive hours on your calendar so you can focus on work without being distracted by meetings.Or, if your energy rhythms are always changing, try staying ahead of deadlines so that you can switch gears if something isnt inspiring you and come back to it another day.4. Get Away From the ScreenDigital nomads have lots of opportunities to step away from their computers- and ofte n find they have the best ideas when they do.I have an entire day to enjoy myself and not sit in front of a computer, shares business coach Harper Spero, who uses her flexibility to work elsewhere during the New York winter. I go to the beach, read a book, meet friends for lunch, stroll around the city, Spero says. Its not that I dont think about my business during this time- I actually feel like I have more space to brainstorm and ideate, to embrace this time without feeling like I should be responding to emails. It can be easy to feel like you have to stay tuned into your computer every second youre at work, but try taking some time away from the screen and see what happens. Go for a walk when youre stuck on a problem. bestattungs a notebook and sit in a remote corner of the office when prepping for your next meeting. Schedule time every week to brainstorm on a whiteboard in the conference room. You might be surprised how much it clears your head. Courtesy of Alissa Lentz5. Take Co ntrol of What You CanWhat most digital nomads love more than any other aspect of their work and travel setup is the feeling of being fully in control of their own lives. I feel 100% in control of my destiny, a perspective that keeps me learning and growing, says Alissa Lentz, whos been nomading for several years while starting her backpack company HERO NEW YORK. Even if youre reporting to a boss every day, its important to remember that- ultimately- youre in control of your career. If youre feeling uninspired at work, start taking small steps to understand why and see what you can do to fix it. Check in with yourself about what excites you about your job- and what doesnt. Lentz, for example, makes it a daily practice to reflect on and journal about what went well and what didnt- so that she can learn and improve. Dara agrees that fostering self-motivation is a life-lesson for anyone. Its important to be able to ask yourself, why am I doing this? Do I want to be doing this? And if thr ough this process of self-reflection you realize this job really isnt working for you, start making a plan for your own escape- to a new job or to a new corner of the planet.
